Luxury Marbles

In literal terms, marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallised carbonate minerals. In geology, the term ‘marble’ refers to metamorphosed limestone, but its use as a luxury material more broadly encompasses unmetamorphosed limestone and many other types of stone.

‘Onyx’ primarily refers to the parallel banded variety of chalcedony, a silicate mineral. Specimens of onyx commonly contain bands of black and/or white. However, as a descriptive term the word ‘onyx’ has also been applied to parallel banded varieties of alabaster, marble, obsidian and opal, and also to materials with contorted banding and a wide variety of colours.
